There is something deeply feminine, mysterious, and magical about the moon—and in Ayurveda and yogic tradition, she is far more than a celestial body. She is Soma, the divine nectar of rejuvenation. She is Chandra Devi, goddess of emotion, reflection, intuition, and water.
In a world that worships the sun (and productivity), it’s easy to forget the nourishment and power of the lunar path. This is where Chandra Namaskar—Moon Salutations—enter as a sacred remedy.
What is Chandra Namaskar?
Chandra Namaskar is a gentle, flowing yoga sequence that mirrors the soft, cooling, introspective energy of the moon. Unlike Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations), which are energizing and heating, Chandra Namaskar is receptive, feminine, and grounding. It helps calm the nervous system, balance hormones, and restore emotional flow.
It’s a sequence traditionally practiced during:
-
Full moons (when energy is heightened)
-
New moons (for intention and inward reflection)
-
Pre-menstruum (for emotional regulation)
-
Emotionally intense days (to stabilize Vata and soothe the mind)
In our Academy and community, we teach it as a living ritual—not just a posture series, but a portal into the divine feminine.
Why Practice with the Moon?
In Ayurveda, the moon governs Kapha dosha, ojas (vital essence), and the emotional body. When you align your yoga and spiritual practices with lunar rhythms, you deepen your connection to:
-
Your intuition and emotional intelligence
-
Sacred feminine archetypes (Shakti, Durga, Lalita, and more)
-
The water element—fluidity, nourishment, adaptability
The full moon is a time of expansion and illumination. The new moon is a time of inward reflection and planting seeds. Moon salutations meet you wherever you are—welcoming your softness, messiness, wildness, and wisdom.
Chandra Namaskar as Goddess Work
Each time we bow in a Moon Salutation, we bow to the Divine Feminine within. You can dedicate your practice to:
-
Durga (inner strength)
-
Saraswati (wisdom)
-
Lakshmi (abundance)
-
Lalita Tripura Sundari (sacred sensuality)
-
Parvati (devotion)
-
Kali (liberation)
Add chants, essential oils, or affirmations to activate your practice as ritual. Think of each pose as an offering.
Create Your Own Moon Ritual
Here’s how you can create a modern-day Chandra Namaskar Ritual at home:
-
Choose your moon day (full moon, new moon, pre-menstruum, or when your body calls)
-
Create a soft space with candles, moonstone, rose quartz, gentle music
-
Open with intention: journal, oracle card, or simply breathe
-
Practice Chandra Namaskar sequence (can be done 3, 9, or 27 rounds)
-
Close with soma-building practices: cooling breath, meditation, rose tea, or mantra
This is medicine for modern women—to reclaim rhythm, embodiment, and cyclical living.
Suggested Additions to Your Practice:
-
Practice in a dark room or by moonlight
-
Anoint your body with coconut or rose oil
-
Use the mantra: “Om Chandraya Namaha” (I bow to the Moon)
-
Track your moon cycle & menstrual cycle together
-
Journal your emotions each moon phase (build lunar awareness)
Chandra Namaskar is more than yoga—it’s ritual, remembrance, and return.
Return to the rhythm of your body.
Return to the quiet whispers of the moon.
Return to your Shakti.
