Abhyanga: The Sacred Oil Ritual that Changed My Life
In Ayurveda, there is a sacred ritual that has not only nourished my skin, but has transformed my nervous system, balanced my hormones, softened my heart, and healed my trauma.
It’s called Abhyanga — the Ayurvedic self-oil massage.
But it’s more than that.
It’s a daily act of devotion, nourishment, and nervous system restoration.
In Sanskrit, the word for oil is “Sneha” — and it also means “love.”
So when we say “oil your body,” we are literally saying:
“Love your body.”
What is Abhyanga?
Abhyanga is the ancient Ayurvedic practice of massaging warm oil into your body, typically in the morning before your shower or during sacred feminine windows like moon days or pre-menstruum.
It is a key component of dinacharya (daily rhythm) and a cornerstone of Ayurvedic preventive medicine.
The purpose is to:
Nourish the skin and tissues (dhatus)
Calm the Vata dosha (anxiety, dryness, overstimulation)
Stimulate the lymphatic system
Balance the nervous and endocrine systems
Protect Ojas, your vital life essence
“Abhyangam Acharet Nityam”
“One should perform Abhyanga daily.”– Charaka Samhita
The Power of Touch & Ojas Protection
Abhyanga is medicine for the modern world.
In a society of overstimulation and disconnection, this simple daily ritual:
Activates the parasympathetic nervous system
Increases oxytocin and serotonin
Strengthens your body’s boundary
Protects your Ojas — the subtle essence of immunity, vitality & radiance
When you oil your body with presence, you are declaring: “I am safe in my body. I am sacred in my skin.”
Dosha-Specific Oils for Abhyanga

When to Practice Abhyanga
Daily before your shower (especially in the morning)
During moon days (for women) or pre-menstruum
Before travel or after stress
During seasonal transitions
When feeling ungrounded, anxious, or disconnected
How to Do Abhyanga: Step-by-Step
Warm your oil in a small metal bowl placed in hot water
Sit on a towel in a warm, quiet room
Begin at your crown, massage your scalp, face & ears
Long strokes on limbs, circular strokes on joints
Massage the abdomen clockwise to support digestion
Finish at your feet, grounding down
Sit or rest for 10–20 minutes, then shower
Rinse with warm water only (no soap on limbs if possible)
“I am loved. I am nourished. I am whole.”
Why I Keep Coming Back to This Practice
Of all the practices I’ve woven into my life — from Panchakarma to breathwork, yoga, and ritual — Abhyanga is the one I return to again and again.
When the world feels overwhelming…
When my skin feels dry and unloved…
When my nervous system needs a mother’s touch…
I come back to the oil.
I come back to Sneha.
I come back to me.
